Ben Shapiro mocked Zohran Mamdani's failed attempt to benchpress 135 pounds, calling it an embarrassing display of weakness and a symbol of a feminized Democratic Party. Shapiro argued that lifting and gym culture have become Republican-coded and that Democrats and the mainstream media want a weak, feminized America. He cited an Axios story linking Trump and MAGA identity politics to debates over belonging and historical memory, saying media efforts undermine Judeo-Christian values and meritocracy. New York City Mayor Eric Adams also mocked Mamdani's lift and later corrected his age. Shapiro said he maxes out near 200 pounds and could bench 135 fifteen times.
The conservative commentator, during the latest episode of his podcast, said Mamdani's inability to benchpress two 45-pound plates was not only humiliating, but also symbolized how Democrats have become an extraordinarily feminized party. The kinds of men the Democratic Party wants to attract are not the kind of men who lift heavy weights, Shapiro said. This is why you've seen, over the course of the last several years, a spate of articles [about] how lifting [and] going to the gym has become Republican-coded.
Democrats and the mainstream media want a weak and feminized America. To back this up, he pointed to a Monday story from Axios, which said President Trump and his MAGA movement's obsession with American identity has fueled a reckoning over who belongs and what history should be remembered. This framing, Shapiro said, highlights how the media is obsessed with tearing down the pillars of American society, including Judeo-Christian values and meritocracy.
