Elie Honig, CNN's Senior Legal Analyst, criticized the calls for James Comey's prosecution over his Instagram post referencing the presidents. The post, which included shells arranged as '86 47,' was interpreted by some as a call for violence against Donald Trump, especially after Donald Trump Jr.'s reaction. Despite Comey deleting the post and asserting no violent intent, the controversy sparked comments from political figures like Tulsi Gabbard advocating for Comey's imprisonment. Honig, while critical of Comey, found such legal suggestions to be absurd and unwarranted.
That's ridiculous. I mean, I am no fan of Jim Comey's. I've been very critical of a lot of the things he's done.
I think posting this was extremely reckless, but I don't think it rises to a criminal level... It's ridiculous to suggest he should be prosecuted.
Comey stated it never occurred to him that it could be interpreted as a call to violence against Trump.
Historically, '86' means to eject someone from an establishment, particularly a bar or night club, but the post spiraled into a larger debate.
