Federal and county employees, union representatives, and TSA staff met with Congresswoman Lateefah Simon to address impacts of a multi-day U.S. government shutdown on working families. Attendees reported that TSA employees must continue working without pay to keep the Oakland airport and regional economy functioning. The Alameda Labor Council estimated 78,000 federal workers in the Bay Area, with 10,400 in Alameda County. Union representatives described paycheck-to-paycheck hardship, childcare challenges, and early-morning shifts that persist despite furloughs for other workers. Participants requested that local concerns and frontline experiences be communicated to Washington for resolution.
