Dorchester man allegedly approached 14-year-old with chemical-laced handkerchief

Willie Cowert, 69, faces an assault charge after allegedly placing a chemical-laced handkerchief over a 14-year-old boy's mouth in Roxbury. The incident occurred while the victim was waiting for his brother on June 28. Cowert made an attempt to cover the boy's mouth with the handkerchief after pouring an unknown liquid on it. The victim managed to escape and report the incident. Cowert was arrested with numerous chemical cleaning substances found in his vehicle. He has been released without bail and is set to appear in court again on October 29.
The victim, a 14-year-old boy, told police he was waiting for his brother to pick him up in Roxbury on June 28 when he was approached by an older man wearing a Hawaiian shirt.
Cowert was charged Wednesday with one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The man poured an unknown liquid on a handkerchief and attempted to put it over the boy's mouth.
