At the DNC summer meeting in Minneapolis, delegates will vote on two competing resolutions addressing Israel and Gaza. Resolution 18 calls for recognition of a Palestinian state, a ceasefire, an arms embargo, and suspension of U.S. military aid to Israel. Resolution 3 calls only for a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages and was introduced in response to Resolution 18. Pro-Israel officials within the party back Resolution 3. Brian Romick of Democratic Majority for Israel warned Resolution 18 would sow division and could benefit Republicans. Polling shows most Democratic voters oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza and want U.S. support to end.
During its summer meeting next week in Minneapolis, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) will vote on two competing resolutions connected to Israel and Gaza. Resolution 18 calls for recognition of a Palestinian state, a ceasefire, an arms embargo, and a suspension of military aid to Israel. Resolution 3, which was introduced in response to Resolution 18, simply calls for a ceasefire in the region and the release of the Israeli hostages. The counter-effort is backed by pro-Israel officials within the party.
In a statement, Democratic Majority for Israel President (DMFI) and CEO Brian Romick said he was "deeply troubled" by Resolution 18 and warned that it would "sow division." "Should it advance, it will further divide our Party, provide a gift to Republicans, and send a signal that will embolden Israel's adversaries," said Romick. "As we get closer to the midterms, Democrats need to be united, not continuing intra-party fights that don't get us closer to taking back Congress."
