DeSantis Is Opening Another Nicknamed Immigrant Detention Center
Briefly

Florida will open an immigration detention facility named 'Deportation Depot' at the Baker Correctional Institution. This center aims to process and deport illegal aliens, not just house them indefinitely. It will accommodate over 1,300 individuals, expandable to 2,000. DeSantis indicated federal reimbursement for costs, emphasizing readiness to assist federal partners. This announcement follows scrutiny of the state's first facility, 'Alligator Alcatraz', criticized for poor conditions, flooding, and health issues among detainees. A federal judge has temporarily halted further construction at this facility due to legal challenges.
The 'Depot' will be located at the Baker Correctional Institution, a temporarily shuttered men's prison in Sanderson, Florida, able to hold more than 1,300 people.
The reason of this is not to just house people indefinitely. We want to process, stage, and then return illegal aliens to their home country.
DeSantis's announcement comes as the state's first facility, the so-called Alligator Alcatraz, has come under scrutiny for alleged poor conditions.
Reports have alleged extensive flooding in the Everglades facility as well as claims of disease outbreaks among detainees.
