Republican lawmakers are deferring to President Trump to begin negotiations on a permanent solution for DACA recipients. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, created in 2012, protects people who arrived before 2007 from deportation and now covers about half a million individuals. Recent months have seen reports of DACA recipients without criminal records detained by federal immigration officials despite program protections. The administration is expanding deportation efforts with increased congressional funding, prompting concern from immigration advocates and Democrats that DACA beneficiaries may be targeted. Nearly 20 DACA recipients have been detained this year, according to immigrant rights groups.
