The Corporation for Public Broadcasting will cease operations by early next year after nearly 60 years of supporting NPR and PBS. This decision follows Congress's elimination of $1.07 billion in funding. The organization's funding, entirely sourced from the federal government, will run out after the current fiscal year ends on September 30. As a result, many staff positions will be eliminated, while a small transition team will remain until January to finalize the closure. Founded in 1967, CPB has played a vital role in distributing federal funds to over 1,500 public broadcasting stations, especially in rural areas.
Public media has been one of the most trusted institutions in American life, providing educational opportunity, emergency alerts, civil discourse, and cultural connection to every corner of the country.
Over 70% of the money it received from the government was redirected to more than 1,500 public radio and television stations.
