Congressional Republicans defend ICE as Democrats rage over Minneapolis shooting
"Our brave ICE agents put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities from dangerous criminals. May God bless and protect them in their efforts,"
"An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots."
"Having seen the video myself ... this was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying."
An ICE officer shot and killed a 37-year-old woman who drove her vehicle close to federal agents Wednesday morning. DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the officer fired defensive shots fearing for his life, fellow law enforcement, and public safety. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, citing video, called that account "bullshit" and said the agent recklessly used power that resulted in a death. Several Republican leaders, including Majority Whip Tom Emmer and House Republican conference chair Lisa McClain, publicly defended ICE agents. Democrats, including Rep. Ilhan Omar, condemned the shooting as unconscionable and reprehensible.
