"This brings out the community, brings a little bit of joy into their lives,"
"This street is like a safe haven for a lot of our folks."
"The department is here for them. They don't have to be afraid of the police,"
Sacramento police closed off a residential block so undocumented families could gather for a posada, a Latin American Christmas tradition with music, food and volunteers handing out toys. A mariachi band played, officers greeted guests and handed out badge stickers, and politicians ate pozole as families experienced a rare sense of safety. California’s large Latino population and up to 7% undocumented rate combine with deportation actions to produce pervasive anxiety. That fear is driving many undocumented people out of grocery stores, retail, schools and churches, making ordinary life seem dangerous. The posada offered a moment of hope and a reminder that some community members and officers treat people without regard to immigration status.
