Former FBI Director James Comey was formally charged with making false statements and obstruction of justice related to his 2020 Senate Judiciary Committee testimony. The charges carry potential penalties up to five years in prison. Comey said he and his family had long expected costs for standing up to Donald Trump and that he could not imagine living any other way. President Trump attacked Comey publicly on Truth Social and urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue him alongside Adam Schiff and Letitia James. The charges were signed solely by Lindsey Halligan, a former personal lawyer to Trump who recently became U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Halligan’s predecessor resigned under pressure after failing to bring charges against others, and a former Federal Reserve governor reportedly was fired amid similar mortgage fraud claims.
