The UN has reported a disturbing trend in Colombia where gangs are increasingly recruiting children, utilizing platforms such as TikTok and Facebook to coerce minors. Between 2022 and 2024, 474 cases of child recruitment were verified. Many of these incidents occur at schools or through social media, where armed groups showcase glamorous lifestyles to lure children with promises of material goods. As governments and social media companies grapple with this issue, the recruitment of minors continues to rise, raising significant human rights concerns.
"The illegal groups are using social media to lure girls and boys into their ranks, which is increasing violence across the country and strengthening narco-trafficking."
"Content on platforms like TikTok depicts armed groups promoting a lifestyle filled with parties, designer clothes, and weapons, luring children into a dangerous life."
