The Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not permit the president to unilaterally impose tariffs, invalidating the Trump administration's tariff regime. The 6-3 majority included Chief Justice John Roberts, Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, and the court's three liberal justices. President Trump reacted angrily and singled out Barrett and Gorsuch for criticism. CNN commentator Scott Jennings said the sequence of events demonstrated a properly functioning government, noting the president accepted the ruling and planned to pursue alternative statutes. Former Clinton aide Keith Boykin disputed Jennings' characterization as overly charitable.
