New York Governor Kathy Hochul advocated for scrapping the Independent Redistricting Commission to enable Democrats to redraw maps in their favor. This position contrasts with years of progressive advocacy for nonpartisan districts, following Republican practices that maintained their power until 2019. Hochul's comments reflect a broader trend among Democrats, as they face legislative challenges like those in Texas, where Democrats fled to block quorum for redistricting votes. This situation highlights the contentious nature of political power struggles during redistricting cycles that follow census updates.
With all due respect to the good-government groups, politics is a political process. Republicans take over the legislature, they can have at it. But until then, we're in charge and we're sick and tired of being pushed around.
Hochul’s stance comes amidst calls from Democrats across the nation, including California's Gavin Newsom, to combat gerrymandering efforts being used by Republicans with similar tactics.
