A senior Chinese official, Xia Baolong, criticized President Trump’s tariff war, particularly a significant 145% tariff on goods from Hong Kong. He termed this action as "brutally unreasonable" and warned that such tactics would ultimately backfire on the US, with implications for ordinary citizens, referring to them as "peasants." Xia emphasized that China's resilience against US pressure indicates that intimidation tactics won't succeed. This response came after the US raised tariffs on Chinese goods, leading to retaliatory measures including a 125% tariff on US imports, highlighting escalating trade tensions between the two nations.
"The US isn't after our tariffs but our very survival," Xia said in a televised speech. "The US has repeatedly contained and suppressed Hong Kong... and this will eventually backfire on itself."
Xia Baolong, a senior Chinese official who oversees Hong Kong and Macao, lashed out over Trump's decision to slap a 145% levy on goods from the region, calling the move "brutally unreasonable."
His remarks came after Vice President JD Vance had said earlier this month that the US borrows from "Chinese peasants to buy things those Chinese peasants manufacture."
His reaction came after China opted to hike its levies on imports of US goods last week to 125% in retaliation over Trump's move to raise tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%.
