Chaffetz Gives Eyewitness Account of Charlie Kirk Shooting
"Well, you know, it was a good crowd. A lot of people were chanting his name. I was there. My daughter was there. My son-in-law was there. My wife was there. I mean, Charlie Kirk coming to town, we were excited. And people were there. And there were lots of them. You know, he came out, he was throwing hats, riling up the crowd. He took his first question, which was I have to catch my breath, Chaffetz said by phone."
"And then he got to the second question, which was about 30 minutes into his presentation, 2:30 local time, and the question was about transgender shooters, mass killings versus people that weren't transgender. And when that happened, when that question came out, you know, going to have the interaction, one-shot. I was watching Charlie. I can't say that I saw blood. I can't say that I saw him get hit, but I did see him fall immediately backwards into his left."
Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck during the America's Comeback tour kickoff at Utah Valley University. The shooting occurred about 30 minutes into the presentation, around 2:30 p.m. local time. A single shot rang out while an audience member asked about transgender shooters and mass killings. Jason Chaffetz, who attended with his wife, daughter and son-in-law, called into Fox News' America Reports shortly after, out of breath from running. Chaffetz said he saw Kirk fall immediately backward to his left but could not confirm visible blood or that Kirk had been hit. Kirk is the founder of Turning Point USA and frequently visits college campuses to debate controversial topics. Chaffetz rushed his family to safety and was emotional on air while hoping for Kirk's survival.
