Society has become numb to images of gore and violence, but Kirk's death provoked an enormous reaction online and off. In April 2023 at a Turning Point USA event in Salt Lake City, Utah, Charlie Kirk argued that an armed citizenry would inevitably include some gun deaths and described accepting some gun deaths each year as a prudent trade to protect the Second Amendment. On Wednesday last week, Kirk was shot dead while speaking at an event at Utah University. The fatal shooting sparked widespread shock and renewed debate about gun policy, political rhetoric, and normalization of violence.
