Federal Election Monitors Arrive as Californians Head to the Polls Election monitors sent from the Department of Justice will be on hand in five California counties to observe, as voters head to the polls to vote on Proposition 50."
"The DOJ said in a statement late last month that the monitors are there to "ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law." Governor Newsom has decried the move, saying it's voter intimidation, and a way for the Trump Administration to later cast doubt on the legitimacy of the results if they do not favor him or the GOP."
Federal election monitors from the Department of Justice are deployed to observe polling places in Kern, Riverside, Fresno, Orange and Los Angeles counties as Californians vote on Proposition 50. The DOJ framed the monitors' role as ensuring transparency, ballot security and compliance with federal law. Governor Gavin Newsom characterized the deployment as voter intimidation and suggested it could be used to question results unfavorable to the Trump administration or Republicans. The DOJ said the monitors were sent at the request of state Republican Party Chair Corrin Rankin. California Attorney General Rob Bonta deployed state monitors to observe the federal monitors. The DOJ also sent monitors to Passaic County, New Jersey.
