British woman may have broken world record after surfing monster wave
"Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"A British woman is waiting on confirmation she has broken the world record for the biggest wave ever taken on by a female surfer. Laura Crane, from Devon, rode what she described one of the most perfect big waves in Portugal on Saturday. The 30-year-old believes the wave was bigger than the 73.5 ft one surfed by current world record holder Maya Gabeira of Brazil in 2020. Ms Crane took on the wave while she was competing at the Nazare Big Wave Challenge."
The Independent requests donations to fund on-the-ground reporting across issues such as reproductive rights, climate change, and Big Tech while keeping journalism accessible without paywalls. The outlet emphasizes the need for reporters to parse facts from messaging and to present both sides. Separately, British surfer Laura Crane of Devon rode what she described as one of the most perfect big waves in Portugal and believes it exceeded the 73.5 ft record set by Maya Gabeira in 2020. The Nazare Big Wave Challenge ride was towed by a teammate and will be assessed by Big Wave Challenge judges and Guinness World Records for record validation.
