"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.Your support makes all the difference."
"A father who has struggled to speak, sing or shout since he was a small boy has received a new treatment which means he can now read a bedtime story to his son. David Metherell, a 45-year-old critical care nurse, caught a rare strain of the human papillomavirus (HPV) when he was just nine months old that damaged his vocal cords. He had 21 operations by the time he turned six, but these left his vocal cords scarred, leaving him with a permanent croaky voice."
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are being trialed at Guy's Hospital ENT clinic to rejuvenate damaged vocal cords. A 45-year-old critical care nurse, David Metherell, contracted a rare strain of human papillomavirus (HPV) as an infant that scarred his vocal cords after 21 childhood operations, leaving a permanent croaky voice and occasional voice loss. The experimental procedure injects PRP derived from the patient's blood into the vocal cords to stimulate healing. PRP is already used in NHS clinics for injured knees and tendons. The treatment enabled Metherell to read a bedtime story to his son and transformed his daily vocal abilities.
