Governor Greg Abbott signed new Texas congressional maps that favor Republicans and are projected to help the GOP win up to five additional seats in the 2026 U.S. House elections. Dozens of Democrats fled Texas to try to block the initial vote on the redrawn maps and returned about two weeks later amid threats of arrest. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and California Governor Gavin Newsom publicly rebuked the effort. Governor Newsom pledged a similar Democrat-favoring initiative in California, and that initiative passed on Aug. 21. Further developments are possible.
