Brazil requests World Trade Organization consultation over Trump tariffs
Briefly

Brazil's President Lula has criticized Donald Trump for avoiding negotiations over trade terms. The Brazilian government has formally requested consultations from the World Trade Organization regarding the 50 percent tariff imposed by the U.S. on Brazilian exports, which was enacted due to Brazil's prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro. This tariff, the highest ever set by Trump, affects approximately 35.9 percent of Brazil's exports to the U.S., amounting to about 4 percent of Brazil's overall exports worldwide. Trump's letter announcing the tariff included sharp critiques of Brazil's legal actions against Bolsonaro.
Brazil's government has petitioned the World Trade Organization for consultations to alleviate steep tariffs imposed on Brazil by the United States, aiming for relief from a 50 percent tariff.
The tariff rate was unveiled on July 9, in a letter from Trump to Lula, which also included criticisms of Brazil's prosecution of former President Bolsonaro.
Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin estimated that 35.9 percent of Brazil's exports to the US will be subject to these high taxes, representing about 4 percent of total exports.
The tariff imposed by Trump was the highest on any country, following actions related to the alleged coup attempt by Bolsonaro, an ally of Trump.
