Bipartisan US delegation signals backing for Taiwan
Briefly

A bipartisan group of US lawmakers visited Taiwan to reaffirm American commitment to its security amid rising tensions due to President Trump's tariffs and remarks. Senators Pete Ricketts, Ted Budd, and Chris Coons emphasized the importance of looking beyond rhetoric to actions taking place, as Taiwan is keen on strengthening its trade and security ties with the US. Despite concerns, Taiwan is actively investing in its military and technology sectors, intending to up its defense expenditure and enhance domestic capabilities, especially in light of lessons learned from geopolitical events, such as the situation in Ukraine.
Taiwan has pledged to boost defence spending to 3% of GDP, investing in self-reliant military strategies, while enhancing domestic arms production, drawing lessons from Ukraine.
Despite a surprise 32% tariff on Taiwanese imports by Trump, US lawmakers reassured Taiwan of continued American support for its security during their visit.
