Anthropic CEO stands firm as Pentagon deadline looms | TechCrunch
"Anthropic understands that the Department of War, not private companies, makes military decisions. However, in a narrow set of cases, we believe AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values. Some uses are also simply outside the bounds of what today's technology can safely and reliably do."
"One labels us a security risk; the other labels Claude as essential to national security. It's the Department's right to choose contractors most aligned with its vision, but given the substantial value that Anthropic's technology provides to our armed forces, we hope they reconsider."
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei declined the Pentagon's request for unrestricted access to the company's AI systems, stating he cannot in good conscience comply. Amodei identified two specific concerns: mass surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons without human control. The Pentagon believes it should access Anthropic's models for all lawful purposes without private company restrictions. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a Friday 5:01 PM deadline, threatening to designate Anthropic a supply chain risk or invoke the Defense Production Act. Amodei highlighted the contradiction in these threats and expressed hope the Department would reconsider, noting Anthropic is currently the only frontier AI lab with classified-ready military systems.
