Another Moderate Republican Opts Out
Briefly

Congressman Don Bacon of Nebraska announced he will not run for reelection in 2026, citing personal exhaustion from 12- to 14-hour workdays and increased threats against his family. During his time in Congress, Bacon has expressed dissatisfaction with the direction of the Republican Party under Trump, openly criticizing Trump's weakness toward Russia. He remains one of the few Republicans willing to critique Trump's leadership, which is seen as a risky career choice. Bacon previously served 30 years in the Air Force and enjoys spending time with family when home in Nebraska.
Bacon announced last week that he would not run for reelection in 2026, stating, "After the last election, I was on E. I had no gas in the tank."
Bacon, a former Air Force member, has been increasingly critical of Trump's leadership, calling him "very weak" in his approach to Russia and suggesting he fire Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
