Anaheim officials reported a wave of immigration raids over the weekend, marking a major increase in federal enforcement. Since mid-July, the city has seen heightened activity following a court order against racial profiling during random arrests. During the recent raids, federal agents used smoke canisters and detained bystanders at the Euclid Car Wash while also apprehending laborers outside the nearby Home Depot. City leaders expressed concerns about community fear and instability, particularly given Anaheim's significant population of Latino residents.
Anaheim has seen targeted enforcement and 'larger activity' since mid-July, when a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking federal agents from using racial profiling to carry out random immigration arrests.
Around midday on Saturday, agents in three or four black SUVs and a white van arrived at the Euclid Car Wash, deploying what appeared to be a smoke canister before detaining one person.
I think everybody in the community feels targeted. There's just a lot of fear and uncertainty, and it's really a very destabilizing thing to go through as a city.
City officials said approximately five laborers were also detained Saturday outside the Home Depot on Brookhurst Street, another frequent target of immigration enforcement.
