Republican state representatives introduced H.B. 693 to prevent schools and local governments from supporting transgender children and to redefine conversion therapy so counseling aimed at changing trans minors' gender identity would be excluded from the existing ban. The bill would effectively legalize conversion therapy for trans minors, bar state institutions from promoting what sponsors call "woke ideology," and include mechanisms to block state funding to local governments that violate its anti-trans provisions. Cuyahoga County, which banned conversion therapy, called the practice "hateful, misleading and dangerous," noted it is discredited by over 28 major medical organizations, and is reviewing the bill's potential impact.
