Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee criticized President Trump's remarks, asserting they specifically target Black and brown-led communities. She expressed determination to defend against such threats, describing Trump's motives as fear-mongering. Local leaders emphasized the need to correct Trump's false claims regarding crime in their area, noting a 29% decrease in crime rates. Additionally, civil rights attorney Adanté Pointer remarked that Trump's comments signal that Black communities are under threat, suggesting they are viewed as problematic locations needing intervention.
"These are cities that happen to be led by Black mayors - what is this about? His motives are fear-mongering and diversionary," Lee said. "When Donald Trump threatens our communities, we stand up."
"This is a signal that he has been sending out throughout his campaign - and now his administration as the president - which is that Black communities are open season," Pointer told KQED.
