A federal judge has mandated the reinstatement of probationary employees terminated from 18 government agencies under the Trump administration. The temporary ruling, which lasts two weeks, stems from concerns about the legitimacy of the mass layoffs. Judge James Bredar's decision expands on a similar ruling by Judge William Alsup, emphasizing that the terminations lacked just cause. The affected agencies include the USAID and CFPB, among others, and the judges disputed the administration's claims regarding employee performance, stating that the rapid firings indicated systemic issues rather than individual misconduct.
"Here, the terminated probationary employees were plainly not terminated for cause," Bredar wrote in his memo.
"The sheer number of employees that were terminated in a matter of days belies any argument that these terminations were due to the employees' individual unsatisfactory performance or conduct," he added.
