A new poll finds voters souring on Trump's handling of the economy
"A new NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll finds Americans deeply pessimistic about their economic outlook, with more than six in 10 saying the economy is not working for them personally. AILSA CHANG, HOST: President Trump made affordability concerns a key part of his 2024 campaign. Here's how he put it on the day before Election Day. (SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING) PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: We're going to make America wealthy again. And we will make America, very importantly, affordable again because people cannot afford the prices."
"But lately, he's really struggled on this. I mean, 57% disapprove of his handling of the economy and just 36% approve, which is the lowest score yet of his first and second terms so far. Plus, you know, his overall approval rating is now 38%. And that's the lowest approval, Ailsa, in a Marist survey since 2018. And more broadly, I really think this poll highlights that a lot of people are just really worried about their economic prospects. And that's shaping their politics."
A new NPR/PBS News/Marist Poll finds Americans deeply pessimistic about their economic outlook, with more than six in 10 saying the economy is not working for them personally. Voter dissatisfaction appears across party lines: a majority of Democrats and independents report the economy is failing them, and 37% of Republicans share that view. Approval of President Trump's handling of the economy is 36% versus 57% disapproval. Overall presidential approval is 38%, the lowest in a Marist survey since 2018. Nearly half of respondents identify rising prices as their top economic concern, shaping voter attitudes.
