Alexander Valen, laid off from Accenture in late 2023, struggles to find a new job, facing challenges in landing interviews and job opportunities. After over two dozen interviews and relying on temporary income sources, Valen highlights the difficulties experienced due to increased competition for managerial roles. Major corporations are reducing their managerial workforce, impacting the market negatively for seasoned professionals. Such systemic changes have created a perception of experienced workers as "expensive," further complicating their job search efforts.
"More recently, it's just dead - I don't hear anything," Valen, who's 51 and lives in Florida, said of his job applications. "It's like a black hole, and I don't know what's going on."
Valen's experience reflects a broader shift in the US labor market that's made it more difficult for workers in managerial positions to find jobs.
The first thing recruiters say when they see my profile is it's very expensive," he said.
Gusto, a small and midsize payroll and benefits platform, found that manager firings and layoffs have risen 66% between January and the present.
