Da Wei, a Chinese scholar at Tsinghua University, shares insights on the evolving U.S. political landscape under the Trump administration. Over tea, he highlights the upheaval caused by the firing of federal workers and the dismantling of government agencies. While he refrains from harsh criticism of Trump, he acknowledges substantial shifts in U.S. governance, prompted by technological changes reminiscent of historical events. He argues that these transformations could yield both positive and negative outcomes for the United States, while noting that some parallels have been drawn to China's Cultural Revolution, though he is cautious with this comparison.
Having said that, I don't want to be too critical to the Trump administration just from this personal level. As a scholar I try to be neutral.
I think there is something big happening in the U.S. It could be bad. It could be good.
Modern forms of government rose with the Industrial Revolution. Now technology is changing, and the government may change too.
Some American friends compare it to China's Cultural Revolution. I mostly dismiss the comparison, but not entirely.
