Worst U.S. whooping cough outbreak in a decade has infected thousands
Briefly

Whooping cough is on the rise in the U.S., with over 16,000 cases reported this year. Experts warn that increased exposure in schools could worsen the outbreak.
"One in three babies with whooping cough require hospitalization, underscoring the need for increased vaccination and awareness as we enter the winter months," Dr. Eric Chow stated.
"We have more testing for whooping cough leading to more detected cases, but delayed vaccinations from the pandemic and vaccine hesitancy also contribute significantly to the outbreak's size," cautioned Dr. Tina Tan.
Dr. Chow noted that the whooping cough vaccine is a five-dose series required in early childhood, making access to healthcare and vaccination critical for preventing this outbreak.
