Wilmington police therapy dog killed in head-on crash, handler injured
""We are heartbroken today because Zena was a beloved member of our Wilmington Police family, and a beloved member of our community," said Chief Brian Pupa. "For three years, Zena put residents and families at ease even during the toughest of times, and her work will not be forgotten. She served her community well.""
""We extend our condolences to Clinician Samantha Cavanaugh, Zena's handler, along with Chief Pupa, the officers of the Wilmington Police Department, and the Wilmington community on the loss of their comfort dog, Zena.""
""Zena brought smiles to all who met her whether it be a visit to a community group, a school, the senior center, or walking around the annual Fun On The Fourth festival," the Wilmington Police wrote in the announcement of Zena's death."
Zena, a 3-year-old Bernedoodle therapy dog for the Wilmington Police, died after being transported to Bulger Animal Hospital following a head-on crash in Tewksbury. A 26-year-old Westminster woman allegedly crossed double yellow lines on Whipple Road and struck the vehicle driven by Wilmington Police Department Clinician Samantha Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh and the other driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital. The Westminster woman will be charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation. Zena joined the Wilmington Police force at 8 weeks old in 2022 and served in the Health & Recovery Unit, providing comfort at community events and to residents.
