The White House clarified its decision to exclude Russia from President Trump's new tariffs, linking this exemption to the existing sanctions already imposed on Moscow that limit any significant trade. This comes amid heightened scrutiny, as Russia, along with Cuba, Belarus, and North Korea, face distinct restrictions. The administration emphasized that President Trump has warned of potential additional tariffs on Russian oil if no cease-fire agreement is reached in Ukraine, indicating ongoing economic pressure associated with geopolitical tensions.
Cuba, Belarus, North Korea, and Russia are not subject to the Reciprocal Tariff Executive Order because they are already facing extremely high tariffs and our previously imposed sanctions preclude any meaningful trade with these countries.
President Trump has also recently threatened to impose strong sanctions on Russia. If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine... I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia.
