""I don't want to keep tearing the roster down year after year," Grier said this week. "Some of these guys, if they play well, they like it here, and they're a good fit with our group. I'm definitely open to bringing some of those guys back and extending them.""
"Alexander Wennberg has been a fit, is one of those pending UFAs, and said this week that he isn't opposed to sticking around. Wennberg, who turns 31 on Monday, signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Sharks on the first day of free agency last year. While he put up modest numbers with 35 points in 77 games, he also had to match up against opposing teams' top centers. But with the Sharks drafting center Michael Misa second overall in June, and Will Smith still plenty capable of playing in the middle at some point in the future, the writing might be on the wall in terms of Wennberg's tenure in San Jose."
San Jose's front office has frequently moved veterans at trade deadlines to acquire draft picks and future assets. The Sharks enter the season with ten pending unrestricted free agents and are not expected to contend for the playoffs. General manager Mike Grier said he does not want to repeatedly tear down the roster and is open to re-signing UFAs who play well, fit the group, and want to stay. Alexander Wennberg is a pending UFA who has fit the team and is open to remaining. The team added center Michael Misa with the second overall pick, has Will Smith available to play center or wing, and has prospect Filip Bystedt awaiting an NHL opportunity.
