Wess Roley, 20, exhibited signs of distress leading up to a tragic incident in which he shot two firefighters. Previously living out of his vehicle, he had recently changed his appearance and behavior negatively. The incident, linked to an unwanted fire at Canfield Mountain, saw Roley targeting firefighters who arrived at the scene. In the aftermath, local fire departments are enforcing additional safety measures. The loss of two experienced firefighters has profoundly affected their colleagues, prompting heightened security for all emergency responses.
Roley had set a fire using flint at Canfield Mountain, a popular recreation area, according to authorities. The firefighters who rushed to the scene found themselves under fire and took cover behind fire trucks.
'I don't know that we're ever going to be able to guarantee people's peace of mind, at least for a while after an incident like this,' Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Christopher Way said.
