American Oversight filed an amended lawsuit against key national security officials in the Trump administration seeking to ensure the preservation of communications made via Signal, an app suited for private, encrypted messaging. The move follows revelations that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared sensitive information regarding military strikes in Yemen through private Signal chats with personal contacts. The suit highlights ongoing concerns about federal record-keeping amidst the use of disposable messaging applications by government officials during their tenures.
The amended suit was filed one day after The New York Times reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared detailed information about forthcoming strikes in Yemen on Signal.
American Oversight's new request to Judge James E. Boasberg would cover any Signal messages about official business sent by or received from Mr. Hegseth and Mr. Ratcliffe.
