Martha Saunders, the president of the University of West Florida, announced her resignation, citing tensions with new board members appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis. She expressed that the decision was difficult but necessary, emphasizing record enrollment and fundraising as her achievements. The new trustees, some of whom have controversial backgrounds, raised concerns over university policies related to diversity and inclusion, leading to strained relationships. Her resignation comes after specific criticisms aimed at her during board meetings, reflecting a significant shift in the university's governance dynamics.
In accordance with the terms of my contract, and after thoughtful reflection, I have made the decision to conclude my presidency. This was not an easy choice. I know it may come as a surprise, and for some, a disappointment.
This is the right time-for me and for UWF. I believe my resignation will allow the university to move forward amidst the current tensions.
