US to deploy 3,000 more troops to southern border DW 03/02/2025
Briefly

The US Department of Defense plans to send approximately 3,000 additional soldiers to the southern border with Mexico. This includes troops from the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team and the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade. Their mission focuses on detection, monitoring, administrative, transportation, and logistical support, rather than law enforcement such as deportation. The response continues a longstanding military presence aimed at curbing illegal immigration and drug trafficking, a critical issue highlighted by past administrations, notably during Trump’s presidency.
"These deployments will bring additional agility and capability to further efforts to stop the flow of illegal migrancy and drugs at the southern border," General Gregory Guillot said.
"The Stryker unit will not conduct or be involved in interdiction or deportation operations," the statement said, clarifying the troops' roles.
"Troops will assist in the movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies; and provide aerial medical evacuation capabilities," the statement added.
The US has been sending military forces to its border with Mexico since the 1990s to curb migration, crime and drug trafficking.
