The Trump administration recently imposed economic sanctions on three Mexican nationals linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, a major drug trafficking and fuel theft operation. This cartel has gained notoriety for its rapid growth in violence following its break from the Sinaloa cartel. The sanctions target key figures within the cartel's fuel theft network, which has led to significant revenue losses for the Mexican government and has been associated with the illicit fentanyl trade affecting the U.S. drug crisis. These sanctions are part of a broader strategy to disrupt cartel operations and enhance national security.
The new sanctions against Jalisco New Generation, including top members Cesar Morfin Morfin and his brothers, target the group's fuel theft network, which has resulted in tens of millions in lost revenue.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said his department will "continue to use all available tools to relentlessly target drug cartels and foreign terrorist organizations to Make America Safe Again."
