The Pentagon has established a second expanded military zone at the U.S.-Mexico border, specifically within Texas. This initiative, part of the Trump administration's efforts to militarize border security, aims to better manage the flow of migrants. Defined as national defense areas, these zones allow the military to temporarily detain individuals perceived as trespassing until Border Patrol can intervene. This move follows the creation of a similar zone in New Mexico and reflects an increase in military presence under Trump's directives, despite a drop in crossings.
The establishment of a second national defense area increases our operational reach and effectiveness in denying illegal activity along the southern border, Gen. Gregory M. Guillot, the head of Northern Command, said in a statement.
Migrants entering the newly designated military installations, or national defense areas, will be considered to be trespassing and can be temporarily detained by U.S. troops until Border Patrol agents arrive.
