""At this time there is no threat to the public and this seems like a[n] isolated incident inside the confines of the bleach plant at the mill," Ireland said."
A University of Maine student died after exposure to gas inside the bleach plant at Woodland Pulp Mill in Baileyville, Maine. The student, Kasie Malcolm, had recently started as an intern and was a junior majoring in chemical engineering. Workers were shutting down the mill when Malcolm and another individual were near a section of the bleach plant and were suddenly overcome. Both were initially taken to Calais Hospital and then transferred to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, where Malcolm died. Fire officials and mill personnel are investigating the incident, which currently poses no public threat. The university is offering support and is withholding further details to respect family privacy.
