Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was a significant but largely unknown figure in the insurance industry, leading a portfolio generating $74 billion in quarterly revenue.
With a focus on health coverage for over 49 million Americans, Thompson ran the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans but had limited public recognition outside the industry.
Thompson, who had been with UnitedHealth Group for 20 years, had a compensation package of $10.2 million, making him one of the top-paid executives of the company.
Before his tragic death, Thompson's public persona was overshadowed by Andrew Witty, UnitedHealth Group's CEO, who was the face of the company in public affairs.
