Esmeralda Hurtado, the sole UC Santa Cruz student charged after over 100 arrests at a pro-Palestine campus encampment in May 2024, was granted a motion of diversion by Santa Cruz County Superior Court. Hurtado must complete 40 hours of community service within six months and will return to court in June. Arrested again on Oct. 7, 2024, Hurtado faced charges including battery on a police officer, resisting or deterring an officer, and false identification to a police officer, and pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors opposed diversion citing physical violence, but Judge Mandy Tovar granted the motion after supporters submitted character references. If Hurtado completes the diversion, the case will be dismissed and there will be no conviction.
