"This notice serves as a next step in the process in REAL ID compliance, which was signed into law more than 20 years ago and finally implemented by Secretary Noem as of May 2025. TSA is working with stakeholders and partners to ensure both security and efficiency at our checkpoints,"
"biographic and/or biometric information to verify identity and match the individual to their Secure Flight watch list result."
"Additional guidance will be announced in the coming days."
TSA filed a notice proposing an $18 fee for travelers who arrive at airports without a Real ID-compliant document to cover the cost of identifying passengers who require additional screening. Payment of the fee would constitute consent for TSA to use biographic and/or biometric information to verify identity and match individuals to Secure Flight watch list results. The $18 fee would cover travel for only 10 days, requiring payment again for return travel after that period. Real ID enforcement at airports began May 7, 2025. Acceptable alternatives include passports, passport cards, DHS Trusted Traveler cards, and permanent residency cards. Additional guidance will be announced in the coming days.
