President Trump is preparing to sign an executive order establishing English as the official language of the United States, aiming to enhance government efficiency and civic engagement. Despite recognizing over 350 languages spoken within the nation, the administration emphasizes English's historical significance as seen in foundational documents like the Constitution. The order will grant federal agencies discretion over language support for non-English speakers, rescinding a previous requirement from the Clinton administration to provide such assistance.
"It is long past time English is recognized as the official language of the United States," the document said.
"Promotes unity, establishes efficiency in government operations, and creates a pathway for civic engagement," according to a White House document.
The executive order allows federal agencies to decide on language assistance, rescinding previous mandates from past administrations.
While English is the majority language, over 350 languages are spoken in the United States, highlighting the country's linguistic diversity.
