On Thursday, the Trump administration reinstated funding for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), a critical news organization originally set up to combat Soviet propaganda, just days after a federal judge blocked attempts to shut it down. The decision follows a March termination of grants linked to Trump's executive action against its parent agency. Alongside RFE/RL, the administration also welcomed back 33 employees from the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, allowing critical programming against the Cuban regime to resume. Despite the restoration of funding, the administration retains the option to discontinue support in the future.
The Trump administration reversed its decision to cut funding for RFE/RL, reinstating support for the news organization after a federal judge blocked its closure.
The administration also reinstated 33 employees at the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, allowing resumption of programming critical of the Cuban government.
Although funding was restored, the administration retained the right to terminate RFE/RL's financing in the future if deemed appropriate.
The initial funding cuts were made in connection with President Trump's executive order aimed at dismantling the U.S. Agency for Global Media.
