A new memo from the Department of Homeland Security enables immigration officials to conduct arrests in schools, healthcare facilities, and places of worship, counteracting previous Biden administration protections. It aims to ensure criminals cannot evade law enforcement under the guise of seeking essential services. This directive follows President Trump’s orders and reflects a heightened focus on public safety threats, including migrants without criminal records, likely increasing enforcement in sanctuary jurisdictions. DHS emphasizes reliance on local law enforcement and common-sense practices to uphold immigration laws.
"Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America's schools and churches to avoid arrest," a DHS spokesperson said in a statement.
The directive rescinds a Biden administration guideline that created "protected areas" and mandates that immigration enforcement operations should not limit access to essential services.
Tom Homan stated, "ICE is back doing their job, effective today," focusing on migrants considered a public safety threat.
Homan mentioned there would be more collateral arrests in sanctuary cities due to the need to search communities for individuals who may be wanted.
