"We followed at a distance. We never got in front of them. We never honked our horns. We never made any sort of noise. We were just keeping an eye on them,"
"They all had their guns drawn. I kept saying, 'What you're doing is illegal. You have no right to do this,'"
"At that point, they started breaking my window. All I could think about was not being shot."
"While the Trump administration supports everyone's First Amendment right to freedom of speech and assembly and to petition, it has to be done lawfully and peacefully, because we will not tolerate unlawful actions committed by agitators who are just causing havoc,"
Observers in the Twin Cities have been following and documenting ICE officers' actions. In North Minneapolis, an observer tracking agents at a distance was confronted after three ICE vehicles turned toward her; agents drew guns, shattered her driver's-side window with a baton, pulled her out, handcuffed her, and detained her for about eight hours. Federal agents told several observers they were impeding investigations. The Trump administration is increasingly invoking a federal law that criminalizes forcibly impeding or interfering with a federal officer to threaten or pursue charges against people who track immigration officers. Many observers report fear of retaliation and uncertainty about whether they will be prosecuted.
